Google Fi's data-saving VPN is now expanding to iPhones

Many Google products start off as a public beta. In certain circumstances, this might endure for years, and leaving that branding behind is a significant milestone.

Today, Google Fi's VPN is no longer in beta. Not only will it have a new home in the revised "privacy & security" section of the Google Fi app, but it will now be available on iPhones.

The information comes from a Google blog post that was published earlier today. In case you weren't aware, Google Fi members get access to a VPN that helps them save money. Fi encourages consumers to connect to public Wi-Fi access points in order to reduce their mobile data usage.

To ensure that users can trust that connection, the company provides a free VPN that protects their privacy while they use the free bits. And there you have it: Google Fi consumers save money.

To learn more about how the VPN works, visit Google's documentation. But, in a nutshell, you can trust it as much as you trust Google, and anything else on those open networks can't see what you're doing behind the veil of encryption. As a VIP perk, Google also offers a comparable service to Google One users.

For years, the improved network VPN has been classified as a "beta," but Google is altering that today. Customers on Google Fi may rely on it after years of use and confidence. The VPN will be moved to a new "privacy & security" area of the Google Fi app, which appears to integrate the previous "privacy," "spam," and Fi Network Tools sections into a single menu, and will be available to iPhone-using Fi users later this spring.

Although it isn't available to us now, Google claims it will begin rolling out today — most likely via an app update or a server-side flag.

Google also mentioned other privacy benefits that Fi customers may take advantage of, such as spam call blocking and protection from SIM-swap attacks, thanks to features like account change notifications and two-factor verification linked to your Google account.
